For Teachers
I have not created this site to encourage plagiarism. I believe people best learn by example, and this site provides examples of amateur writing.
Unfortunately, some students use this site to plagiarize. However, teachers will never stop plagiarism by shutting-down sites like mine. Rather, teachers should use the Internet as the best tool they have ever had for catching plagiarists!
There are many plagiarism detection services and software packages available on the market. Using one of these tools will definitely catch anyone who plagiarized an essay from this web site. Search Google for "plagiarism detection", and see for yourself:
I have always believed that teachers should require students turn in a digital version of their paper, along with a paper version. When teachers assign the essay, requiring digital format, they should tell students that they will be running their essay through a program which will search the internet for any paragraphs which are plagiarized. This warning should scare the student away from any forms of plagiarism.
Still, I frequently receive emails from teachers asking if I may confirm the date I received an essay from a student. Apparently many students try to get out of expulsion by claiming they are the original author and submitted the essay to the website themselves. Unfortunately, I do not have a record of when I received essays; however, this website's search engine includes the date an essay was added to the database, so you may confirm yourself how old an essay is. (This is not a perfect solution because we do occasionally re-build the database from scratch, which creates new date stamps.)
