Youth And Value Of Education
I. Introduction:
The context of this presentation is the elaboration of the lecture notes for the teacher training series held by the Education Manpower Bureau in preparing the teachers for the upcoming new syllabus of the Liberal Studies starting in 2009. The curriculum has three main areas of studies, the area we have been invited in teaching is the “Self and Personal Development” section. The five lecturers invited for this training series have the common belief that teaching rationale of liberal studies changes the way of teachers and students’ role, encourages critical viewing, and, empowers youth in terms of building up value system and multi-perspective, plus the use of current and daily incidents as teaching materials resemble the concept and format in Media Literacy. This paper is to write on how well media materials can serve in the socialization and growth in adolescents.
The paper will first illustrate the importance of “Awareness” both in self development and Media Literacy, the meaning and the actualization of it in the learning and teaching in the possible liberal studies environment. The paper will define and relate the concept of self (real, ought, and ideal) and the communication levels (intra, inter, and mass). Further, it illustrates with series of activities where the theme of success is explored. Here the wellness model will be introduced for the decoding tool as an example. The paper also would stress the importance of inter communication level in youth development where “social emotional” thoughts and behaviors are incredibly dominating at this developmental stage.
Decoding stories and people are the crust of the critical viewing session. The wellness model will be continually used. And in the second session of this paper, the theoretical concept of Critical Pedagogy and Media psychology will be interwoven in the discussion.
