Women vs. Women: The Workplace
For years women had to struggle in the workplace to either be recognized for their hard work or acknowledge that they had the same rights as men do. Starting in the mid-1990, more women were able to attain managerial position and higher. However once they attained those positions, they were unwilling to share their success stories with the younger women who are struggling to make it up the corporate ladder. Often, it was the men who mentored them how to climb the ladder and make their success.
The article in Usnews.com had shown that there were several reasons why women aren’t mentoring younger women in the corporate world. In one case, women who achieved her position hadn’t thought about trying to assist or mentor other women. These types of women are usually absorbed in their own work and are not interested in mentoring or haven’t given any thoughts of mentoring other women. They put in long hours at the workplace and have very little social interaction with anyone. Some have even given up the notion of even having a family. In some cases, there are women who do not want their lifestyles to rub off on to other women forcing them to forgo their relationships.
In another case, entrenched institutional attitudes make it difficult for junior and senior women to form the kind of supportive relationships that help many men navigate their careers. Plus there’s the attitude that still lingers around that if “two women who are chatting together in a room must be plotting to stage a revolution within the company.” (U.S. News) That kind of notion usually puts up barriers between the women at the workplace.
There’s the discrimination factor as well. If there’s only the women that’s being promoted instead of the men, that’s grounds for discrimination.
