Why Was The Steamboat An Important Invention
The steamboat was an important invention because it boosted travel times of the 19'Th century. In the late 1700's,into the 1800's, steamboats were the only means of transportation to new parts of America. This was important because it was easy for people to take paddleboats down river, but to go up river it required steam power. Many people moved west on steamboats, and steamboats supplied all the goods people would need to live in these new areas. After the steamboat had made itself a reputation there were thousands of steamboats on the Mississippi River. As steamboats became more and more popular, more states started making them. They now had steamboats in Oregon, California, the Great lakes, and other places that had rivers. When railroads started being built steamboat age quickly came to an end, the reason for this was because trains were safer and more dependable than steamboats. Hundreds of steamboats were destroyed during the Civil War, and by World War II there were almost none left. There are only a few old steamboats that still exist, and are only used to transport tourists.
