When people ask you to describe your strengths and weaknesses in an area concerning education, the first thing that will come to mind are grades. Typically, grades are considered the only means with which to judge your strengths and weaknesses concerning school, but this is not true. Grades are important but desire and motivation are equally important if not the most important. Everyone is equally capable of acquiring knowledge therefore grades are an accurate representation of a persons applied interest to a subject and not so much a representation of capability. The big question is not what makes you a good student but what makes a good student distinguishable from other good students for academic advancement? The answer lies in what drives their passions and interest in a field. How a student views education is very critical to what drives a persons interest. Education can be viewed as the acquisition of knowledge, or as a formality for success. The student who learns because he loves to learn is driving by a philosophy of education that is rarely cultivated. I consider my passion for education, which stems from my philosophy of education, to be my greatest strength for academic advancement.
Good grades and a sound educational background are essential for academic advancement. They represent skills that are necessary to be both a good student and a good candidate for academic advancement. However, they do not represent all of the qualities needed to be a lifelong student. The qualities needed to be a committed lifelong student are not inherited but cultivated. They develop through a positive upbringing that highly values education, not just as a means of creating opportunities but also as a means of expanding your mind. I view education as a discovery of my own ignorance. This philosophy is what drives my desire to learn.
