Violence has been present in our society since the beginning of time. Sometimes people find it difficult to express their feelings verbally, and find no other choice but to release their anger physically. Over the years, violence has become more and more socially acceptable. The numbers are rising, and the actual violence is becoming more and more disturbing. We can see our favorite actors committing these acts of violence on the big screen, and we can sing along to our favorite music with all this negativity. Is all of this violence in our society being caused by the media?
Violence is the basis of many films in this day and age. Directors, screenwriters, and producers are finding the need to use more and more violence in their movies in order to make the story more interesting and exciting. Often times, the actual storyline itself revolves around an act or multiple acts of violence, continuing with even more violence to help make the story. There is always a sense of danger that keeps the audience begging for more. The question is, why do we perceive all of this negativity as excitement?
When viewing movie violence, the audience may sometimes consider the violence justified. We distinguish the good characters from the evil characters in our minds. The good characters are usually always likable people, whereas the evil characters are usually always dislikable people. The more dislikable they are, the less pity we have for them. The evil characters use violence because they are terrible, cold-hearted people. The good characters only use violence when protecting themselves or the people that they love and care about. We may think that it is wrong when the good characters get hurt, but when the evil characters get hurt, we root and cheer, and feel a sense of relief.
