In today’s society we have a lot of influences which drive our lives. When considering the most common situation in today’s world, it is next to impossible to find a home or office that lacks a computer or television. We spend time at work using computers and then come home to visit with our favorite friend; the good old television.
We should consider what television can do to our lives and how it might negatively impact the most important of personal relationships
In an article ' The Plug-In Drug ' the author Marie Winn discusses the bad influence of television on today's society. T.V. is a ' drug ' that interferes with family ritual, destroys human relationships and undermines the family.
Winn claims that over the years television has affected many American families’ lives. Since television appears to be an everyday ritual for the masses, many Americans tend to spend more time in front of the screen than they do with their family. This can result in unhealthy relationships with close family members. She also acknowledges that television might destroy the uniqueness and closeness of the Family Circle.
Ehrenreich describes in her essay “ FamilyValues” how her father taught her about the decency of life “The best prophylactic was to study and learn all you could…” (Ehrenreich 673). He helped her see the different traditions that her family valued during the decade of the eighties.
I think I grew up luckier than most. When I was child, it was a time when not everyone had a television and this was the case for our family. It is for that reason I spent a lot of unforgettable time with my grandfather. I would go to his room every night and listen to his wonderful stories about his life. Some of them were meant to teach me a lesson about my own life and others were simply distant memories of what he had seen over the years. There is nothing on earth that could replace those moments for me.
