Themes And Development To The Characters And Plot
The following are three (3) of the central themes of The Scarlet Letter novel.
A) The effects of guilt.
B) The condition of isolation or alienation.
C) The obsession for revenge.
How is each of these important to the development of the plot, and the development of each of the main adult characters?
The obsession for revenge, isolation, and guilt can lead to a characters development as well as the plots. Revenge, isolation, and guilt will result in changes of each of the characters and add a nice twist to the plot. In the following paragraphs, I will explain how guilt, isolation, and revenge help aid the development of the plot. I will also tell you how guilt, isolation, and revenge help aid in the facilitation of each of the adult characters.
The effect of guilt on Hester was one of a significance. She felt sad in the beginning and wretchedly guilty for her act, but in the end it helped make her a stronger person. She taught Pearl, her child, to treat the other Puritan children with scornfulness because she never taught Pearl how to interact with others.
This made Pearl a stronger person in an oblique way. Even though Pearl isnt a main character, she affects her mother and is part of the guilt that is laid upon her mother. Pearl was a form of guilt for her mother because she had to watch the consequence of her sin live in front of her everyday and she had to love the child making it weird for her because she felt like she had to love her sin. Making her feel like she loved her sin, she had mixed feelings for Pearl. She held Pearl away from the Puritan children. She didnt want Pearl to get hurt like she did and didnt want Pearl to grow up like the other gossips, so she made sure Pearl didnt turn out like someone she didnt like.
