Three ways to reduce the negative effects of stress:

1) Primary initiatives
2) Secondary initiatives
3) Tertiary initiatives
i) Reducing physiological stress responses: relaxation training

ii) Changing cognitive reactions: rational-emotive therapy
To rationalize our emotions
To modify their negative perception of a situation
Aim: to make people aware of this irrational and self-defeating quest for perfection.
iii) Changing behaviours: Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP)
Deals with reduce the negative behavioural impact of stress
Focus on maladjusted behaviour, attempting to change the overt manifestation of stress
iv) Counselling
To help employees cope with stress of all kinds.
It leads an individual to reappraise a situation.

Chapter 4: Increasing individual resilience to stress

If people can be educated to change their behaviour and attitudes, they are more resilient / flexible to all types of pressure.
Benefits – Individuals – will experience improved mental and physical health
Organizations – more productive, workforce and less stressed

Healthy lifestyles
To build up 'a stress tolerance' by improving physical fitness
(Nutrition, exercise, corporate fitness programmes)
Goal: to create a social norm in which regular physical exercise becomes an accepted part of corporate life.
Stress management programmes confirm their effectiveness for reducing anxiety, depression, somatic complaints, sleep disturbances, muscle tension levels, blood pressure and urinary catecholamines.
