Team Dynamics

Team Dynamics
Functioning as a team has its challenges. Each team member has his or her own personality and method of doing things. “Personality factors of team members are characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting that should affect team performance through a variety of process ranging from how team members approach task completion to how team members interact with one another.” (Bell, 2007, p.595) As a team unites, the members will begin to recognize their role and focus on working together. The team will communicate and give feedback to contribute on achieving a goal. I will express my personal experience interacting with team member personalities and how the team members work out their differences to achieve a goal.

Team member’s personalities could demonstrate a heterogeneous or homogenous group. A heterogeneous team is a group of individuals with different personalities. Team members having different personalities could sometime affect the performance of the group. Different personalities sometimes prevent the team from making a decision. It will take time for the team to learn from each other and use these differences to his or her advantage. Having a heterogeneous team could bring new ideas and methods towards the team goal. A homogeneous team is a group of individual with similar personalities. “Members are compatible with one another and therefore will be more capable of communicating with one another and be more motivated to work together.” (Neuman et al., 1999, p.28) A homogenous team has better odds in making effective decision because the members have a similar way of thinking. Having similar personality could be a negative aspect as well. The team members could struggle on finding or choosing a leader. The members may have conflicts or they may have trouble coming up with new concepts.
