The System Impact Model
People are constantly involved with their social environment. As Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman state, many people are also involved with other systems such as the following: families, groups, organizations, and communities. In a diagram referred to as the systems impact model, it states that each individual comes into contact with each of its other systems in the social environment. A system is a set of elements that are interrelated to make a functional whole. The three basic systems are micro, mezzo, and macro systems. (P.19) On the other hand, a man by the name of Urie Bronfenbrenner came up with the Ecological Systems theory which like that of the systems impact model, views the child as the individual, within a complex system of relationships affected by multiple levels of the surrounding environment. It too evolves the micro, meso, and macro systems. It also contains one extra system called the exosystem. Bronfenbrenner saw the environment as a series of nested structures, including but also extending beyond the home, school, and neighborhood settings in which children spend their everyday lives. The first system is called the Micro System. According to Zastrow and Krist-Ashman, the Micro System is a person is a type of system that entails biological, psychological, and social systems. All of the systems within the systems impact model interact in reference to social work, a micro orientation, involves focusing on an individual’s needs, problems, and strengths. It also emphasizes how the individual will confront the problem, create a solution, and make the best possible choice at the end. Micro practice later involves, working with an individual and improving that persons functioning. Examples of the Micro System discussed by Zastrow and Krist-Ashman are a women’s resilience after violence or development as a gay or lesbian person.
