This survival guide should be used as an educational tool to depend on throughout an academic career. By employing the key points discussed in this guide, it will help one understand any weak areas. Deciding to return to school can be an exciting time in someone’s life; however, it can also be intimidating and somewhat of an overwhelming feeling, once started. This guide will help to keep things in perspective and to give guidance while taking college courses.

Using Educational Resources

The ability to download audio appendices to a computer, cell phone, or other portable devices can be a useful tool. This allows for quick access to information, and enables mobility if wanting to study away from home. This makes the information portable and convenient.
The online library offers many different ways in which to conduct research. The many databases offer an extensive amount of information on a multitude of different subjects. Each database also has different types of media such as articles, and encyclopedias. Peer-reviewed articles have been reviewed by at least one expert in the field before publication, thus making the article trustworthy and correct.
Identifying key information helps to understand how to conduct a quality search. Some key characteristics are: article title, database name, publication date, author, keywords, and if the article is peer-reviewed. These characteristics will help aid in the way a search is conducted.

Upholding Academic Honesty

Using academic resources is a privilege that must not be abused. Being honest and using references when applicable, are ways to uphold academic honesty. Writing down any references that need to be noted, can eliminate problems later. Forgetting this step, may lead to dilemmas down the road. Noting references immediately is a best practice habit to put into action as soon as research begins.
