In today’s society, religion plays a big role in our lives as Americans. Almost every person here practices some sort of religion, each one varying from the other. But why are there so many? This is because all people have different beliefs, some sharing the same as others. There are over twenty major religions around the world today. In these religions, there can be thousands of different sects that branch from each one, all holding different beliefs of their own. America itself has over ten widely practiced religions, and many cults and sects. This means that there are a ton of them of which you disagree with. But does this make them wrong? Who knows? I do know, however, that it is wrong to judge and stereotype people because of their religion.
I grew up as a Catholic. I went to church every Sunday morning, Catholic schooling on Wednesdays, I celebrated it’s holidays, and I always lived by that religion’s morals and beliefs. But why did I choose this particular faith? It’s because I was raised that way. Both of my parents practiced Catholicism, as they were born and raised into it just as I was. According to the First Amendment in the United States Constitution, as an American, I have the right to hold any religion that I choose. But I now practice what is known as Agnosticism. I don’t believe in any particular religion and without any real proof, I refuse to believe that any certain one is correct. I’m not a bad person; I just have different opinions than Catholics, as I do with any other religion. But since my whole family now has a completely different belief than mine, does this mean I say that they are crazy or bad people for thinking the way they do? Of course I don’t, and if your religion is any different from their’s, then you shouldn’t either.
