Stereotypes

In the United States, we have a multitude of groups of people that make up the whole of our society. All of these groups are stereotyped in one way or another. I would like to show some of the stereotypes that are associated with politicians, tattooed persons, feminists, and senior citizens. Politicians are stereotyped as liars, cheaters, and ear ticklers who have no compassion for the common man. Tattooed persons are stereotyped as criminals, drug addicts, and ruffians. Feminists are stereotyped as hard-nosed lesbians. Senior citizens are stereotyped as slow moving, ineffective members of society.

These groups however, do not provoke the same image to all persons. For example while many people may see a certain politician as a liar and a cheat, others may see him/her as a savior. A certain politician may commit an act that was questionable to some and from then on, that politician is not able to live down that stereotype by that group of people. Tattooed persons are stereotyped as drug addicts, and criminals. However, in the past couple of years tattoos have become mainstream, whereas before they were taboo. You would be hard pressed to find someone that does not have some sort of “ink”. Feminists have been long stereotyped as hard-nose lesbians. My wife and I have a friend who is a feminist and she does not fit this stereotype at all. Our friend is married with children, and just believes that women should be treated equal to men. In my opinion, I think this stereotype came about because men are scared to admit that a woman could do the same job that they are doing. In the last decade, senior citizens are looked on as a drag on society. According to “http://www.mountainside-nj.com/senior.htm”, a senior citizen is considered as such at age 60. I know many 60 year olds who are extremely productive members of society.
