The company to be used in this strategic plan is Starbucks Coffee Company. A strategic plan will help Starbucks make decisions and distribute resources as situations take place. The plan will give the company an idea as to the direction the company needs to take to achieve a goal. However, the company has to know where it stands and where it wants to go.
Organizational Background
Starbucks started off in Seattle’s Pike Place Market in 1971. “Starbucks has always been the place to find the world’s best coffees. But in 1971, you would have had to travel all the way to our only store in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market” (Starbucks Coffee Company, 2005, ¶ 1). The company began selling whole bean coffee and moved on to other ventures. However, as the company grew and customer taste changed, so did the company. In the 1990s Starbucks branched out to other areas in the US. Now Starbucks has coffee shops throughout the US and supermarkets sell their coffee brand. The company sells hot and cold coffee and drinks, pastries, and souvenirs. Starbucks is also well known for its “reduce, reuse, and recycle” waste program that helps keep the environment clean. The company also has a partnership with the Tazo Tea Company. Starbucks has a loyal coffee and tea drinker fan base. The company has “built customer loyalty cup by cup as buyers of its products developed their palates” (Cleary, 1999, ¶ 9).
Mission Statement
Starbucks’s mission statement is to “establish Starbucks as the premier purveyor of the finest coffee in the world while maintaining our uncompromising principles while we grow” (Starbucks Coffee Company, 2005, ¶ 2).
