How Is Shrek Shown To Be The Hero
Shrek' uses presentational devices to defy the stereotypical views of man-eating ogres, showing Shrek to be valiant and good- hearted. Similarly, the parody of the genre is further explored through presentational devices which contrast "Lord Farquaad" with the stereotypical fairytale prince.
In the beginning, the makers use presentational devices, such as mis-en-scene to generate ideas of a traditional fairytale opening. Presentational methods implemented were the use of the original "Dreamworks" opening which suggests a fantasy or magical experience. Following this, we are presented with a traditional opening to a fairytale story, starting with a typical, antique fairytale book. This idea is further explored through the enchanting moment of the book opening by itself and the radiant light or fairy dust streaming down over it; this creates a stereotypical and captivating start. In addition, the commencement of the book mentions the typical fairytale line of "Once upon a time." The book follows the traditional tale of a valiant prince slaying a terrorising dragon and saving a beautiful damsel in distress. The book contained vibrant colours with stereotypical descriptions of the princess and prince. The music employed was classical and enchanting suggesting a magical, traditional opening. The Scottish voice narrated on top was chosen because Scotland was considered a land of old tales, with mystical stories, thus giving a relaxing, charming moment. All these devices of mis-en-scence, gives the feeling of a traditional fairytale.
However, the idea of a stereotypical fairytale is reversed through the introduction of Shrek. This is done through alternate presentational devices, such as bathos, where Shrek destroys the conventional setting of mis-en-scene by ripping out the last page of the book and using it as toilet paper.
