SELF AWARENESS
Self awareness is the process of understanding one’s own beliefs, thoughts, motivations, biases and limitations and recognising how they affect others. Without being self aware, recognising personal and cultural beliefs, and understanding interpersonal strengths and limitations, it is impossible to establish and maintain good relationship with people around us. “I Know Thyself” is a basic tenet of succeeding in today’s world.
Need for self awareness
To be effective, each of us need to know ourselves and to be aware of our own thoughts and feelings, strengths and weaknesses values and reaction to people, places and things. The goal of self awareness is not to change all that we are, but rather the goal is to know and understand ourselves so that we can effectively use the gift of who we are. We must develop self awareness in order to recognise our personal biases and to reflect on our behaviour through the conversation. In all communication situations, both participants experience subjective responses. Relating to a person who may be resistant or unable to verbalize clearly brings out various reactions among us.
One of the biggest mistake that people make is assuming that competence and performance are their ticket to success; when in fact they are merely the price of admission. Most people are good performers. It's a huge mistake to think that good performance is the only element of a successful career.
It takes a combination of self confidence, positive personal impact, outstanding performance, communication skills and interpersonal competence to succeed in your career and life. People who are successful in their lives and careers have mastered all of these five elements, and excel in one or two of them.
