The tourism industry has advantages and disadvantages, but nobody can contest that is one of the fastest growing and largest industries in the world. It is expanding globally because people nowadays have more leisure time, higher standards of living and better transport.
In the first part of the essay, we will explore the advantages of tourism, the positive aspects.
First of all, tourism is a big source of income for a state. With that money, the country is able to improve its infrastructures (education, hospital…) and also use that money to invest in other tourism infrastructures.
Moreover, it provides direct employment for the inhabitants of the country. A large part of the tourism industry is made up of entertainment (visits, restaurants…) and souvenirs.
Finally, tourism is proof that the country is open-minded and wants visitors to embrace its culture including its gastronomy, history… Countries wish to have culture that is world-renowned.
But, there is another side of the coin. Tourism is an industry, and like all the others industries, it has negative aspects, such as environmental destruction. Indeed, building a resort hotel in the Amazon, creating a golf resort in the Sahara, is very detrimental to the environment. They destroy trees, but they also destroy the homes of species and local populations. They have not got the right to do it, but they do it anyway.
Too much tourism can kill the culture. Indeed, we have seen the “Americanization” of culture: fast-food, film, fashion which encroaches upon other cultures. Finally, with the growth of tourism, we have a hidden tourism side: sexual tourism.
Unfortunately, this tourism is very famous and the saddest element is that it attracts tourists to Asia for example. Thus, thousands of young girls are exploited in order to meet the demands of those “customers”.
