Reflection On Reading And Writing
My reading and writing experience
Reading and writing are unforgettable memories of ones childhood and college years. They provide a strong foundation for rest of our lives. English being my second language, I faced tough times when I migrated here from India.
As far back as I can remember, my first reading and writing experience was during my kindergarten. I was learning to write alphabets and numbers. My teacher would make sure that I used my pencil to trace on the lines and curves of the letter. Our homework was similar, where we had to trace on the letters and numbers with the pencil. Here the trick part was making sure the pencil tracing was exactly on the printed letters. My sister used to guide me by holding my hand, where I was grabbing the pencil firmly and making surely I was following the line. After I was done writing the letters I had to read them out loud, this was done to develop a relationship between the written “A” to the oral “A”. In the beginning I used to mix with “B” and “D” because they looked similar. We had ABC’s songs to have them memorized.
Gradually we started to relate letters to words. For example: A is for Apple, B is for Ball…..and so on. But here reading the words became a challenge. I was used to pronouncing a single letter, but now had to combine the letters and say it as a word. Here I was amazed to notice how a letter is pronounced when it is joined with many letters. Very soon I realized how the sound of a letter is not the same when it is used in a word.
As the years progressed I started writing sentences. Learning about grammar and how it all fits into a sentence made me more aware and responsible for writing complete sentences. During my primary schooling in India, we had a lot of memorization to do.
