Recovered Memory Syndrome

The media often covers stories in which adults have uncovered repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of their parents or other family members. For example, individuals have reportedly recovered memories of satanic cult rituals being performed on them by their parents. Do you believe that memories from childhood can be repressed? Do you believe that some of these 'uncovered memories' may never have happened? If individuals are remembering things that did not actually happen, then where are these memories coming from? Could therapists inadvertently be implanting false memories in their clients? When writing your essay on 'recovered memory syndrome', be sure to discuss the costs involved in the possible recovery of false memories, such as the loss of family, ruined reputations, legal costs, etc.

What we remember and what we don’t can be strange at times. There have been quite a few times where I have stopped and wondered to myself, “Is that what really happened? Is there something I am forgetting?” This happens to many other people across the world. And then there are the other cases, the ones that people don’t want to remember or wish they didn’t. There are those who later on in life begin to remember things that they have not recalled before. Possible memories of traumatic things being done to them, such as rape, sexual abuse, and some even go as far as odd rituals being performed on them. These are better known as “repressed memories” to most. Others know it as “false memory syndrome.” But in truth, which if these are which? After countless days of searching the internet, this seems to be a very heated debate amongst many. A major player in this seems to be a foundation called False Memory Syndrome Foundation, or FMSF for short. They believe that many are falsely accused of wrong doings because recovered memory cannot always be accurate.
