Qualities of a Good Teacher
There are so many wonderful professions in the world, such as doctors, lawyers, astronauts, pilots and so forth, but for some reason, I have had a passion about becoming a teacher ever since I went to school. I strongly believe that teachers are the ones who instruct us what we need to learn. Basically, teachers guide us in the right direction when we are lost or need help. Skillful teachers help us to learn quickly and understand easily, and fortunately I had lots of competent teachers when I was in school. As I was reading Nicholas Gage’s, “The Teacher Who Changed My Life”, I was touched and moved by the description of his teacher because it reminded me of a particular teacher who saw a spark in me and whose qualities inspired me. Like Marjorie Hurd, My Mongolian language and literature teacher, Sarangua, would discover her students’ talent by asking what was worthy for us, keeping us on the right track, and trying out every single way until it really truly worked for us. There are numerous positive characteristics of dedicated teachers, but three important ones are to be knowledgeable, patient, and supportive.
First of all, I believe that effective teachers should be professional, and they have to improve their knowledge constantly. Like Marjorie Hurd was for Nicholas Gage, who escorted his way to becoming a successful writer, Miss Sarangua was the best teacher I ever had. She was serious, for she would give the answer to any question with a full logical explanation. It made sense to us because she not only taught or made us memorize all the grammar, but she would connect the subject to an everyday life experience with comprehensive examples. She caught everyone’s attention such that a whole class was on the edge of our seats when she was teaching. She would tell us interesting stories and assign us to read books at home.
