Motivation is “the psychological feature that arouses an organism to action toward a desired goal” (Motivation, 2008). Satisfaction is “the contentment one feels when one has fulfilled a desire, need, or expectation” (Satisfaction, 2008). Performance is “the manner in which or the efficiency with which something reacts or fulfills its intended purpose” (Performance, 2008). Motivation, satisfaction and performance are all valuable tools in which a manager can evaluate their employees. Each item is has a benchmark, which determines the rise or fall of an employee’s climb up the corporate ladder. A good manager has to know how to keep a positive influence in order to increase motivation, satisfaction and performance in the work place.
A positive influence plan can be created to assist in building motivation, satisfaction and performance in employees. Integrating quarterly or semi-annual team building sessions, conducting annual employee surveys, providing compensation for good behavior or achievements, and giving quarterly employee reviews are good positive influence plans if it is executed properly.
Managers have to be aware of work place attitudes and make changes according to the attitudes and/or atmosphere at work. “David Maister provided evidence that workplace attitudes affect a company's financial success” (Valadez, 2008). A bad attitude can spread like a virus in the office. If you have one disgruntled employee who constantly complains about their work environment soon or later, another employee may feel that they are unhappy as well. On the other hand if you have an employee who is happy to be there on a daily basis and openly shares this opinion with other co-workers, it may help other employees to feel the same way about their job and attitudes.
