Poker Machines Should Be Banned
“Gambling has been a part of Australian culture since the first European settlement” (Delfabbro et al, 2005). Historically, poker machines were begun to Victoria in 1992 (Doughney, 2002). In the recent year, “Australia has twice as many poker machines as can be found in all of Europe” (Ballantine, 2000). Thus, slot machines have been become more and more popular in Australia. Furthermore, gambling machines can attract a huge amount of money from players to generate revenue. This revenue can be used to improve educational systems and public utilities. However, the debate is largely focused on poker machines that have contributed to the funding of Australia Government, whereas they should be banned. Actually, poker machines can bring many disadvantages to people as well as to society, especially when the players become addicted gamblers. In addition, compare with other countries, Australian poker machine players lose more money (Social Responsibilities Committee, 2008). Therefore, this essay will argue that poker machines should be banned in Australia, particularly in Victoria because poker machines can lead to increasing crime, impacting on finance, and it can also damage to Australian families.
To begin with a lot of harmful impacts on interpersonal relationships that poker machines create, gamblers regularly spend most of their time at Crown casino, pubs or clubs. As a result, they do not have enough time for their families and their works. Moreover, all of their emotions will be depend on the results of gambling. For example, if they win, they will be happy but if they lose they will be unhappy and they may be stressed, physically exhausted and even hurt their families, particularly their children.
