Heritage Sites Is Worth Preserving For Their Historical, Cultural And Economical Value
      Hong Kong is now regarded as one of the most modern cities in the world and it has changed a lot in 6,000 years’ time (Conservancy). “It is transformed from a small fishing village to an international trading centre” (Conservancy). It has also changed from a colony to an administrative region of China. In this modern, cosmopolitan city, there are lots of heritage sites including historical buildings and backstreets left behind in this long period of time, and they are all of high historical and cultural value. However, as the city’s world status is rising, the values and importance of the heritage sites are dropping. In order to maintain its competitiveness among different world-class cities, Hong Kong is having more and more economic development on the top of those demolished historical buildings and backstreets. It seems that not much effort has been put in preserving or restoring these valuable historical buildings and backstreets, but only demolishing them in order to have more new development area. However, citizens, academics and professionals point out that the heritage sites, which are of high historical and cultural value, does not necessarily hinder economic development in Hong Kong, but alternatively, it can help boost Hong Kong economy if they are well preserved and promoted.
      In recent years, the government has been proposing different development plans of the city and many of them involve the areas, where some historical buildings or backstreets are situated, therefore the demolition of the buildings or backstreets become necessary for the plans. For instance, according to the Conservancy Association, the “Woodside” in Quarry Bay was planned to be pulled down in 2005 for the development of high rise residential uses.
