Personality Assessment and Theories
The Psychodynamic Theory is believed to be when a person’s personality consists of having unconscious thoughts, feelings, motives, conflicts; and repressed problems from early childhood. The method of assessing this personality is projective tests or, personal interviews. Projective tests include the Rorschach test and the Thematic Apperception test. The Rorschach test includes 10 inkblots; the person being assessed must visually see the inkblots and provide his or her interpretation of that the inkblot looks like to them. The Thematic Apperception Test consists of 20 pictures in which the person being assessed must create stories about. During a personal interview the person conducting the interview can conduct a structured or unstructured interview. A structured interview consists of a list or predetermined questions whereas an unstructured interview is more of a free form conversation.
The Humanistic Theory consists of a person that has a drive toward personal growth and higher levels of functioning. The methods used to assess this personality type are objective tests and personal interviews. Objective Tests can include standardized tests that rely on the person being assessed to honestly report on their own behavior and personality.
The Trait Theory consists of a person whose personality consists of relatively permanent dispositions that causes the person to think, feel, and act in characteristic ways. The methods used to assess this theory are objective tests.
The Social Learning Theory consists of people who’s personalities have been determined by personal experience, in other words according to the text, by past reinforcement and punishment as well as by observing what happens to other people. The methods used to assess this personality are personal interviews, objective tests, and observations.
