Personal Statement

There will always be those defining moments in your lifetime that go by without you ever recognizing how much they've impacted your character. One's character can be described as how they portray themselves, what their beliefs are, or even an attitude or feature that makes up and distinguishes the individual. That defining moment in my life was January of my junior year, having the courage to step onto the stage and perform in front of a crowd for our spring musical for the first time. Now that I come to think of it, I honestly had no clue what I was getting myself into.

At the beginning of my junior year, I had made a promise to myself that I'd try new things so that I could expand my horizons. The previous summer I had decided to join the school's advanced choir, which was something I was very interested in doing. That year, winter break had come and gone just like any other, but this year it was very different and nothing prepared me for what my choir teacher had asked me the first day back. "Hey Matt, why don't you try out for this years spring musical?" Shocked and appalled, I thought to myself " Are you crazy, I don't have the guts to stand on a stage and act, yet alone, sing in front of hundreds of people." To cover up my fright, I told her that I was involved in too much as it is. At the time, I was a member of the school's National Honor Society, which took up most of my time. Link crew, which is a club where upperclassmen act as mentors to incoming freshmen, and other activities such as preparing for the senior graduation as a junior class representative, and the numerous choir concerts. Therefore, auditioning for a theater production I knew nothing about was the last thing on my mind.

After some serious thought and debating with my choir teacher and friends, I chose to go to the auditions only having in the back of my head that if it wasn't my thing, I would leave. Near the end of auditions it was finally my...
