CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The onset of puberty is accompanied by an increasing interest in sex. The word “sex” is derived from a Latin word which means to cut or divide. At first, this interest is self centered, focusing on adolescent bodily changes and observable happenings (Marin, 1983).

Oxford Advanced Learner Dictionary (2003) defined sex as the division of an organism into male and female gender. At times people pursue sex in order to obtain status or bolster their sense of personal worth or competence, to express power or to exploit (Marin, 1983)

Gradually, most adolescent begin some experimentation, touching themselves, playing with their genitals, exploring holes and cervices. Often by accident, they experience orgasm through self manipulation. Interest in sex as erotic feelings and expressions increases as well as exchanging sex-oriented literature. Some authorities consider sex to be the underlying motive of all human behaviour and consequently, explain every act as an expression of our sexuality. At the other extreme, there are those individual who restrict the term to just those physical acts that involve the organs, for example coitus, masturbation, kissing etc (Afuye and Ibigbemi, 2000).

The term sexuality encompasses physical sex and also includes the manner in which sex is manifested in society. Although sexuality is an individual matters, our definition include; at least one’s life style, and interpersonal style as well as one’s sexual orientation attitudes and behaviour. Afuye and Ibigbemi (2000) stated that sexuality include the birth to death processes of how a person thinks, feels and acts. It could also be termed as how a person sees the world.
