WHY US? We all had a time when we were prejudices towards someone. We didn’t really have a reason why, nor did we have knowledge or thought about the person. It may simply be the person’s appearance you dislike, or could be their race, background, or religion. I have been prejudicial many times before as well as others without really knowing it however. Nevertheless, I am against racism and believe that is completely wrong, especially toward a person not seeking any knowledge of them nor knowing them since my family and I experienced it, not long ago. When we first moved into our new home in the summer of 2001, we did not know that we have been discriminated against. All of our neighbors seemed so friendly and kind. However, one day, unexpectedly, we receive a police letter from one of our nearby neighbors. When my dad opened the letter, it indicated that someone had called the cops complaining that our garbage can didn’t have a lid on and that it was causing a smell. We looked at each other in confusion and wondered why someone would complain because of that. Besides, our garbage was not any different than the others on the block but, we still began putting a lid on our garbage can. The next week, we got the same letter again but this time it indicated that if the “caller” complains one more time, then we would have to pay five hundred dollar fine. My dad was upset and my mom was confused, along with my brother and me. We all knew that there was a prejudice person on the block who was not fond of us, although we did not understand why. From that day forward, I realized that prejudicial people were everywhere, no matter where you go. There are different things that people are prejudicial about such as their physical appearance, culture, race, or religion.
