"My Oedipus Complex" is a clever story about a young boy, Larry, who grows up in his own safe world with just himself and his mother. However, when his father returns from WWI, a man whom Larry hardly knows, it is a constant battle between the two for the mother's love and attention. The author, Frank O'Connor chose a unique title for the story. Those who are familiar with psychology and Greek mythology will understand the significant tie of the title to the story. The story behind Oedipus is quite interesting. According to the story, O'Connor's Larry represents the Greek Oedipus. On the other hand, in an analytical sense, an Oedipus complex is a bizarre and interesting theory that the infamous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud created.
Throughout the story, Larry often associates his father to Santa Claus because his father is a mysterious character who comes and goes unnoticed. In addition, sometimes Larry's father bears interesting gifts that are old German uniforms, weapons and artifacts from the war.
According to Larry, his life was happier when it was just himself and his mother, he enjoyed things like teatime, staring out the attic window, and rummaging through his father's box of artifacts. Although Larry seemed happy, he did not really have the opportunity to interact with other children his own age. It seems that in order for Larry to cope with his problems and boredom he would often resort to visiting with Mrs. Left and Mrs. Right.
When his father returns home, it seems that often Larry becomes upset, irritable and jealous. At one point, he even blames God for bringing his father back home. Larry intentionally wishes that God would create another war and take away his father. Larry's view on God in this example seems to be very exaggerated
