Orchestra
When I stepped into the concert hall of Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, I thought, “what a magnificent place!” The hall was charming with its impressive architecture, well-designed walls, comfortable seats and relaxing lightings. I was very anxious as this is a new place and new experience for me. As I looked around, I thought everyone is also feeling the same as me because all of them were sitting silently without moving. Everyone was well-behaved. The hall was very quiet.
The orchestra started with a majestic opening music, which is the Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture. The music started on smoothly with light and simple melody. Then, at the middle, the percussion instruments joined in loudly. Creating a grand and magnificent echo. I certainly fell in love in this music with its lyrical melody which gives me a sense of satisfaction and relaxation.
The second piece was Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E Flat – “The Emperor”. This piece was played with an accompaniment of grand piano. In the first movement, the piece starts with a revolutionary opening of the flamboyant gesture of the piano and orchestra. Continue with the soft and lyrical second movement with its beautiful melody. Images of sun, winds, sky came into my mind as if I was dancing with the wind. However my fantasy crushed when the third movement came in with its loud romping sound. The transition section from second to third movement was certainly a magical experience.
Final piece of the orchestra was Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. This is my favorite piece throughout the three. I was overwhelmed by its persistence of beats. It created a curiosity and tension atmosphere as we don’t know what will happen next. It was unpredictable, erratic and exotic. I liked the section when the timpani came in. It fired up the environment with its loud thunderous sound. To me, this music is powerful. It actually inspired me. This music signals life. Life consisted of many ups and downs, just like beats.
