“Dreaming about it isn’t enough” are the words of General Colin Powell. Not only   the most respected and popular military leaders of his time, but a tremendous role model for African Americans. Powell not only follows his dreams, he chases them. He was the first black American to serve as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a four-star general. Through his intellect, hard work, and determination, he has certainly earned every star. His courage and devotion has lead him to the honor of being called a hero and his life is an inspiration for every American; General Colin Powell certainly deserves the title of a hero due to his bold leadership, incredible courage, and his total commitment to his role in office.
General Colin Powell fulfills the characteristic that defines a hero of leadership. He is totally committed to his heroic role. The legacy of his career in uniform, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, is an example of how Powell is a hero. His main focus was to achieve state goals. During Desert Shield, Desert Storm, he was the perfect knowledgeable solider. Historian and journalist Austin Bay describes Colin Powell as “a


military man who understands the political context of war as well as the intricate operational details of modern combat…he understood his role was to provide General Schwarzkopf and the field forces the opportunity to achieve a decision…”(Roth 222).
General Colin Powell was simply the view point in decision making concerning Desert Shield, Desert Storm. He is not afraid to speak his mind in any decision being made. That is a true example of leadership in which General Colin Powell sincerely fulfills. Powell is a role model to many Americans today, through his extreme courage. He is not afraid to say what he has to say. He overcame the weaknesses and temptations that many people today give into, which is not speaking our mind. During the Persian Gulf War, Powell’s job was to bring decisions into the Bush White House....
