It Is No Doubt That Industry Was Developing Really Fast In This Century

It is no doubt that industry was developing really fast in this century, which extremely improve our live. However, there are still have many environmental problem are cause by develop, it is incessant effect our living, even life. This essay will take environmental accident of Minamata Bay and Love Canal for example, and describe what happened in there in the past. Additionally, the essay also will compare and contrast these two places.

Minamata Bay, in Japan, there was a big environmental accident in the past, which leaded to at least 649 people have died and 1,385 people have poisoned so far. (Baines, 1993) The murder was a local factory. From 1930s on, Chisso Company as a leading chemical manufacturer, which produced a lot, meanwhile, it also produced a huge number of extra remains. Traditionally, this kind of by-product has to dispose first, after this process, by-product can be wasted safely. However, Chisso Company did not follow that. Base on ideal situation, near the Minamata Bay, the company decided to pour their waste without any disposal, in which was including mercury. According to Baines (1993), the Chisso factory owners believed that the mercury would be watered down by the sea and so would not cause any harm. Unfortunately, the disaster still occurred. At first, cats were seen acting strangely, such as attacked owner, jumped into the sea. At the same time, birds looked like abnormal too, sometimes fall down from the sky. After these, this kind of strange phenomenon happened from human being finally. From the Japan’s top court blames government for Minamata disease, this disease killed hundreds of people, disabled thousands and produced birth defects in the city of Minamata, Kumamoto Prefece, in southwestern Japan. However, people who lived in there still did not know what reason lead to this disease. Until May 1956, the truth firstly came into light.
