No Child Left Behind

Daniel Newson Debbie Marshall 7/22/07 Seminar Elementary Education Elementary education was not my first choice as my major, but it came to me when I realized that I love being around children and teachers are needed everywhere. The importance of education in the eyes of the public has gone down in the United States and is shown through the lack of school funding and low salaries for teachers. Also my mom is a kindergarten teacher and it inspires me to help the community in the way that she does, by handing down knowledge to the youth of our upcoming nation. The job description of an elementary school teacher entitles introducing children to the basics of education and life skills sometimes acting as a “coach” by using interactive discussions. They use “pep talks” to help and guide students to gain a better understanding of the materials presented. Teachers not only teach Mathematics, History and English, they also help children understand difficult concepts and how to solve problems that they will face in life. Making children walk in a straight line, being quite in the halls and not running is all basic behavioral traits they will need to survive and be a part of a well working community. Preschool and Kindergarten teachers are basically like another mom/dad to the student in the way that they are around them the majority of the day and they have to do things that other teachers do not have to do, like dealing with various bodily functions that they have yet to get a grasp on. The skills needed to become a teacher are vast and are found in a select few, which hints why there is a shortage of teachers. It takes patience, intelligence, and a lot of kindness and sympathy. With a new demand from the increasing number of students, they want courses which are more relevant to their needs and the variety of people that want or need to learn English is now much greater than ever.
