Module six covered team dynamics, creative problem solving and teamwork. In this paper I will discuss creative group problem solving and the various methods of doing so. I will also talk about my preferred decision making process and the advantages and disadvantages of group decision making.
Brainstorming is the most widely known and used form of group decision making. In the workplace, brainstorming is commonly used for “solving complex problems and for creating new products and to name and market them.” Brainstorming is about coming up with as many ideas as possible and the goal is quantity rather than quality. Critiquing the ideas is saved for after the process of creating the largest list of ideas or solutions is finished. If management wanted to increase production from a certain department, gathering a group of employees from that same department and having them collectively brainstorm alternative ideas would be a good time to implement a group brainstorm.
Synetics is the “process of generating novel alternatives through role playing and fantasizing.” Unlike brainstorming, synetics is not about quantity, but focuses on generating novel ideas. A good time for managers to use synetics would be when an organization is trying to differentiate itself from competitors in a flooded market.
Nominal grouping is the process of “generating and evaluating alternatives through a structured voting method.” Studies have shown that nominal grouping outperforms brainstorming, but since critiquing is involved, professionalism is required. I believe a good time to use nominal grouping would be in similar situations where brainstorming would suffice, but only implemented when the group has proven itself to be cohesive and professional.
