My Philosophy of Education

I believe the goal of education is to enable students to grow into productive and compassionate members of society.   I want my students to become people who can contribute their skills and ideas towards improving the world in which they participate.   I want my students to understand their value.   I believe I can guide them to understand, contribute, and respect their peers, and the world, which they are intrinsically connected.

In order to motivate students I believe there are three important factors a teacher must demonstrate; respect, relevance and passion.   To build respect in the classroom I believe the students should learn about their own identity, as well as the identity of their fellow classmates.   I would encourage the students to explore and share stories about their personal histories.   I would have them discuss their similarities and differences.   In a multicultural city like Toronto, one classroom could provide a million learning opportunities.   When they understand and connect with each other, they will have learned how to respect each other.

My favourite teachers were always able to make the material easy to grasp, no matter how complex it really was.   They did it by connecting lessons to real life situations.   The exciting part of learning for me came from the possibility that I will get to apply this knowledge in my everyday life.   When I was shown the relevance a lesson had on my life it became satisfying for me.   I want to elicit the same satisfaction in my students.   I believe it is important for students to understand that knowledge is never irrelevant.     Something you learn today in history class can be applied tomorrow.   A good teacher will show how to make those connections. That is what I will strive to do in my classroom.
