Motivation and Behavior
The incentive that initiates the primary framework of human behavior is known as motivation. Humans are social inclined; their need for human interaction or acceptance within other groups is inescapable. Human behavior has three main culprits of motivation that is composed of: motives, biological needs, and the need for stimuli. Also, internal and external motivation is involved. Internal motivation is a person’s blueprint of his or her self-image, and biological and emotional needs. External motivation is the necessity of seeking approval from outside sources, such as a child seeking permission from his or her parents, or a college student looking to obtain an appropriate grade. “Across varied perspectives, motivation of behavior has typically been conceptualized and measured as a dispositional tendency or as a context specific orientation” (Gaine & La Guardai, 2009, p. 184). A person’s maintained or initiated behavior is an instrumental way of potentially identifying features within a person such as personality.
Motivation falls into two different realms: positive motivation, or negative motivation. Positive motivation comes from inspirational or rewarding incentive. For example, pep rallies at a high school is an inspirational way of creating school spirit, and usually a way to motivate a high school sports team to achieve a win. Now on the other hand, Negative motivation creates a foundation of fear. For example, the fear of poverty motivation keeps an individual working. An individual creates motivation to work every day and bring home an income to keep from his or her car getting repossessed or from getting evicted from his or her home. Negative motivation is used to improve a condition like behaviors in which are negatively motivated are used to keep a situation form getting worse instead of improving the situation.
