“An eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind.”
Whenever I hear the name Gandhi, I immediately think about this memorable quote. I fully agree with this line, who was said by a very famous man, who was not only remembered for his presence, but his works and achievements too. This is such a powerful quote. It’s so simple to grasp the idea, which Gandhi wants us to follow. There will never be an answer for world peace, but if everyone on the planet followed this quote, we would be able to obtain world peace. It seems so straightforward to me, but unfortunately will never happen. An “eye for an eye” means to seek revenge on your enemy, and repay them for what they have done to you. “Only makes the whole world blind” means that if everybody felt this way, eventually nobody would understand how to respect one another, and the world would become angry and depressing. People wouldn’t be able to see the madness going on around them. Evil begets evil. Hurting will only cause more negative reactions.
Mahatma Gandhi is, perhaps, the best known Hindu in the world and is considered the father of his country. He has influenced many, and has had a profound impact on the religious conscience of humankind. Born in India in 1869, he married when he was fifteen and his wife was thirteen. He studied law in England and practised law in South Africa between 1893 and 1914, where he fought against laws that discriminated against the Indians who settled there. He gained inspiration from the teachings of the Bhagavad-Gita and based his religious ideals on the concepts of duty, truth, non-violence, and spiritual liberation. When he returned to India in 1915, he immediately went on a non-violent mission to end British rule. Gandhi was trying to change the governance of India as well as peoples’ lives.
