Modern Challenges In Immigration
*Week 3 Modern Challenges in* Immigration Checkpoint
To be honest I think that government policy should not favor a certain immigrant group over another. Whether it is for political, religious, monetary reasons, et cetera, everyone who comes to the United States to live has a reason for wanting to come here. As long as the group or the people in the group do not pose a threat to society, I would be hard pressed to deny any of them their civil liberties. This country was basically founded on the idea of immigration. Although there should be limitations such as the number of immigrants allowed and benefits given, I think that preference for citizenship should be given to the neediest and most oppressed first. Whether they are legal or illegal, it has been shown that immigrants have had a positive economic impact on our society. They are willing to work for lower wages than most Americans thus making businesses able to sell and buy things at a lower price. This is due in part to the fact that they are being paid more to work here than they could make in their home countries. I also think that preference should be given to skilled workers. People such as doctors, nurses and teachers who are in high demand in certain areas should definitely be given preference for citizenship because the United States would benefit from their knowledge. I think that during times of war, political instability or major natural disasters, citizens of certain countries should be given preference for citizenship. Living under these conditions can, at times, be a matter of life and death.
