Throughout history, the way people communicate has changed dramatically. Our work, lives and society have been changed by new technological innovations. Maybe the most affected area by new technologies is the human communication area. This has to deal with technological media. All these media basically make our society become more convenient with their day to day life and live life straightforward.
However, are all these effects going to benefit or harm the relationship between media and the society? In the pre-industrial societies, the dominant means of communication was face-to-face oral interaction that directed and shaped the society. There was no technology interfering in the transmission of attitudes, ideas, experiences and feelings. On the other hand, personal and direct interaction are no longer the dominate form of communication in today’s society. It is the new technologies that mediate communication. The way we perceive the world depends greatly on the dominant means of communication and throughout the centuries and the dominant means of communication has changed with the increase of the use of technologies.
Technology affects the way individuals communicate, learn and think. It helps define society and determines how one interacts with others on a daily basis. Technology has both positive and negative affects on society including the possible improvement or declination of society. Society is defined as, "the sum of social relationships among human beings" and technology is defined as, "the body of knowledge available to a civilization that is of use in fashioning implementations, practicing manual arts and skills and extracting or collecting materials." Technology shapes our society and has both positive and negative affects.
