Mark McGwire hitting seventy home runs this season gave baseball a much needed attendance boost. During the end of the season when McGwire was working for the home run record, every game he played in had a sold out crowd. Every game was sold out due to the fact that the fan would get a chance to see Mark McGwire make history. Everybody wanted to see those amazing games in which Mark hit his sixty-second and seventieth home runs. A reason the fan would want to be at that game would be that they would have a chance of catching one of Mark McGwire's home runs. The estimated retail value of the seventieth home run ball is more than one million dollars. Nevertheless, if the lucky fan decided not to sell it, then they had the option of being a kind person and returning the ball to Mark or donating it to the Baseball Hall of Fame. But in the last five years, there was no major record being chased, so the average person had no apparent reason to go see a baseball game. The attendance in 1997 was lower than ever and in 1998, the attendance was up amazingly. After the Major League Baseball strike in 1994, baseball never really recovered; until now. Mark McGwire hitting seventy home runs greatly restored baseball as America's great past time.
