Making Ethical Decisions

How should one proceed when making an ethical decision? Everything we do, or don’t do, is a choice that may affect our lives and the lives of others. Ethical decisions should be based on core ethical principles rather than self-interest and personal goals. I usually base my ethical perspective on the results or consequences of my action and the best for the majority. Similar to Kudler Fine Foods, I believe that everyone has a moral right to experience the “good life” and ethical decisions should be based on results or consequences of action. If I was a manager at Kudler Find Foods, I don’t think there its values would affect my performance negatively.
Recently, I took a William Institute Ethics Awareness Inventory (EAI) assessment to see which ethical perspective categories I fall in: the scores of 3 for Character, -2 for Obligation, 11 for Results, and -12 for Equity (CORE) were the results. Based on the description of the scores obtained, I’m very result-oriented and I judge others based on the outcome of their performance and concrete evidence. In addition, as stated in the description, my “approach to ethics is likely to focus on what could be done to improve the well being of the greatest number of persons. One approach might be to develop rules of ethical conduct for people to follow, along with corresponding sanctions, in order to achieve what is best for society as a whole. Another quite different approach might be to improve overall satisfaction by creating a more pleasant environment in which people enjoy learning and working together for the betterment of society” (University of Phoenix, 2006). With either approach, my ethical style requires achievement of measurable results.
