King Arthur
The time period affects the way a story is told because through out the years the role of women in society has changed. In the medieval times church taught that women were inferior to men and that they should be passive and obedient to their fathers and husbands. It was thought that women were cursed because of eve, and that women with power could only bring chaos to the world. In our time women are a great successful part of the society. They now take on roles in politics, medicine, and many other occupations. That is why the Arthurian book “the High Queen” (modern version of Arthurian legend) gives women more power in society in contrast to the books “Morte d’Arthur” and “Idylls of the King”. In the story “the High Queen” Igraine (Arthurs mother) is the one that escorts Guenivere to Camelot so that she could be married of to King Arthur. She talks about her sister Vivian and how modest she is and that her sister was given the honor of being the “priestess of Avalon”. When Guenivere arrives at Camelot Arthur offers her power to help him rule the kingdom of Camelot. In the books “Morte d’Arthur” and “Idylls of the King” Guenivere had no say in anything. She had no say on who her husband would be or even on how some things should be run in Camelot. This proves that the time period in which a story is written affects the way it is told because through time people opinions on women, and women’s role has changed.
The time period affects the way a story is told because during time not only has the portrayal of women changed, the way people view men has also changed. In Arthurian times the man was the head of the family and the one that made all of the rules of the house hold. The men were portrayed as heroic, strong, powerful, and indestructible, almost un-human like.
