i like eggs they are nice and gooeThe media works in many ways in our society. It is a tool for promotion, news, information, a platform for sharing ideas as well as serving as a local and national mouthpiece for many organizations. It is one huge factor in our environment that influences decisions and acts to inspire our youth. Sometimes the messages that the media projects, however, are not all positive. It is important for groups like the Partnership for Alcohol Responsibility to scan the immediate environment for negative media messages and to work with local media forces to improve the messages being sent to area youth through the medium.
Many theorists suggest, with evidence, that media has an influence on or affects our society, the way we think and the things we do. PAR considers messages used by certain industries and businesses through the media to be detrimental to the improved environment that the group’s efforts try to create. Examples are large billboards with ads that display the names or images of alcohol, television or print ads that portray women as sexual objects because of alcohol and drink specials in print publications geared towards students.
While it is impossible to immediately eradicate the environment of such messages, groups and individuals can work with the creators of the ads as well as the media to promote more positive messages. PAR also supports messages from advocates like Jean Kilbourne who work to reduce negative images set for genders in the media.
Finally, it is important for the PAR coalition to work with local media to reduce the frequency of negative alcohol advertising in their publications or on their broadcasts and to increase the number of stories that make the public more aware of how to improve the environment around them concerning the culture of alcohol.
