Jaws Essay

I am going to talk about the different techniques that Stephen Spielberg uses to build tension in his blockbuster film Jaws. The film jaws is known for its breathtaking soundtrack, which plays the main part in building up the tension and fear. The film starts of underwater to let you know both the setting and what type of thriller it could be, You can also here the sounds of the ocean to give you the underwater feeling and a type of shot that makes you feel as if you were the shark swimming around hunting for food. In the music sequence whenever the shark is near or attacking it has its own theme tune which is made to build tension because when you hear that music you know it's the shark and that something is obviously going to happen although at some parts of the movie it does trick you by playing the music but nothing really exciting happen, this is how the tension is built up. The music suddenly stops and heads to the first scene where teenagers are having a fun time at the beach playing some music on a harmonica this shows that they are safe and nothing is going to harm them in anyway, it also shows that the build up of tension has gone away and that the shark is not present. Then two teenagers decide to run off and the sound of happiness starts to fade away and the theme music of the film starts to fade in. Only the girl enters the water and the music is very quiet, slow and gradually increases in pace and this suggests the shark is getting closer. All of a sudden you find your self underwater from the sharks point of view to show that the shark is swimming closer and closer so the music gets more dramatic and as the shark gets the girl the girl starts to panic and you can see the way she is struggling because at this point the music is really loud and dramatic. But as she disappears underwater the music stops because the tension has already developed and makes the viewers wonder when this will happen again, they realise this when the theme music is...
