Abstract
The ISO 14000 environmental management standards exist to help organizations minimize how their operations negatively affect the environment (cause adverse changes to air, water, or land); comply with applicable laws and regulations. ISO 14001 is the international specification for an environmental management system (EMS). It specifies requirements for establishing an environmental policy, determining environmental aspects and impacts of products / activities / services, planning environmental objectives and measurable targets, implementation and operation of programs to meet objectives and targets, checking and corrective action, and management review.
This paper explores the different aspects of EMS and the ISO 14001 series. It outlines the justification for the implementation of EMS in day-to-day operations and need of ISO 14001 certification.

Introduction
Improving the environmental performance of corporations is one way of limiting environmental damage. An environmental management system (EMSs), such as ISO 14001, was first published in 1996 and specifies the actual requirements for an environmental management system. It applies to those environmental aspects which the organization has control and over which it can be expected to have an influence, provide a framework for organizations that wish to effectively manage their environmental affairs. Implementing an EMS that conforms to the ISO 14001 standard may help businesses integrate environmental values into their operations.
