Is Cinema the reflection of Society?

In the world of today, cinema and entertainment are synonymous to each other. It has become a popular form of entertainment because it makes us live our emotions through other real people. It depicts our joys and sorrows, desires and weaknesses, hardships and strengths and makes them credible. It can be really relaxing, a good get-a-way. It can persuasively communicate progressive messages to the masses in an effective manner. On the other hand it can be really addictive, where one can spend way to much time on it, resulting in wasting away precious moments of our short lives. Also sexual and violent scenes can be unnecessary and potentially harmful for viewers. The effectiveness and impact of movies can be positive but it can also be negative.

Film making is a creative pursuit at the core, which draws people by the hordes to its viewing. They open a useful window onto the society inhabited by people of different races, economic background and their social values. This helps in the study of culture followed by different societies thereby acquiring deeper understanding of the customs, arts, values and practices of daily life of this people. Movies were introduced to India on July 7, 1896. Since, its inception, the Indian cinema has concentrated on various subjects highlighting the problems, complexities and the various aspects of the Indian society in general. Such subjects have created ripples in the past and have acknowledged notable Indian films and filmmakers throughout the world. Thus the concept of ‘Art cinema’ came into existence. Just two decades after the first Indian film was made, caste became a central issue of creative exploration by the film industry.
