Steven M Ippolito October 13, 2008 Interpersonal Communication T/TH 10:30 Paper # 1 Effective listening is an important skill for all people to have, and with suchcomes many benefits. Listening enhances your ability to learn, relate, influence, play, and help. Listening is an active process, and many behavioral differences occur between genderswith their listening behaviors. We must consider our frame of reference while participating in the listening process and keep a nonjudgmental stance when responding avoidingcommon forms of fallacious reasoning. Listening requires attention, and different behaviors/situations may influence people to listen more attentively than others. I hope to explore my frame of reference in listening, and discuss listening in general. People have different purposes .for listening, whether coherent intention or not. We listen to learn, acquiring the knowledge of others. I listen to learn constantly. As an entrepreneur and constant self-evaluator I listen to the comments and feedback of my customers and clientele so that I may better my servicing and enhance the training of my employees and co-workers. We listen to help, assisting others in some way. My mother and I are very close, and I listen to her vent about her issues and try to offer constructive criticism to better confidence. We listen to influence, changing the attitudes and behaviors of others. With my roommate, I listen and empathize with his concerns on our financial issues and I then empathize and attempt to offer advice of which he is more likely to follow. We also listen to play, enjoying ourselves and sharing pleasurable thoughts and feelings. I enjoy making people feel good, and I constantly love to listen to other’s stories and laughing. As well I enjoy sharing my own experiences, and adding pleasure to other people’s day. All people must listen in order to effectively communicate, regardless of intent.
