The discovery and applications of new technologies have changed the typical ways that people watch television shows. In addition, of watching programs on their T.V. sets, people are using the internet in their favor and convenience.
Nielsen SVP, Steve McGowan said in relation to Nielsen study, “Younger viewers have been faster than older generations to adopt new television options, but since technology adoption is increasing within all age groups…viewers take more initiative to catch up on shows they have missed..” he added, “This will have tremendous implications on how networks schedule and distribute their programming.” (The Nielsen Company, 2007)
Another study by Nielsen found that most adults still choose to watch television on their T.V sets (The Nielsen Company, 2008) Therefore, a unanimity in preference has not been established when it comes to T.V. viewers in different age groups.
Recording devices such as DVRs and its commercial representation the TIVO, which consist of the DVR and a remote control, has become a breakthrough in favor of making T.V watching easier for people with busy schedules. TIVO official web site states, “The TiVo service finds and records all your favorite shows, every time they're on, so you can watch them at your convenience…And if you connect your TiVo DVR to your home network and high-speed Internet connection you get: movie, TV, and music video downloads; access to your personal music and photo libraries on your PC or Mac…”
This study will focus on the relation of these and other new tools in people’s T.V watching habits.
