Individual Behavior and Communication
“Behavioral Communication is defined as a variable of individual differences concerning the use of behaviors that indirectly express one's feelings, needs, and thoughts, for more direct and open forms of communication” (Ivanov, 2008). The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the elements that determine individual behavior as well as discussing how communication is impacted by ethical responsibility, diversity, beliefs, perceptions, demographics, leadership responsibilities, communication barriers, effective vs. efficient communication and nonverbal communication.
Ethical Responsibility
Within an organization ethical responsibilities are doing the right thing by making the best decisions all the time. Knowing that doing the best one can do gives peace of mind to making decisions that impact the ease or difficulty of the job at hand. Doing the “right thing” is more than an action, how someone dresses, behaves or what he or she is saying; the “right thing” is everything about one’s presence and is a reflection on an organization and how others perceive the organization. Ethical responsibilities require that both internal and external customers are told the truth. Internal customers include teammates and management while external customers are comprised of vendors, patients and others that one has contact within the work environment.
These responsibilities include understanding what is being said by the customer, asking for clarification if necessary, or providing further information in order that everyone understands the situation resulting in no misunderstandings or misleading statements. Always telling the truth is a moral responsibility ensuring professional conduct at all times. Management has set high ethical standards and the expectation is for all individuals within the organization to uphold these ethical standards.
