Do You Remember the 13th Amendment?
Slavery has been in commission ever since the biblical era with the Old Testament documenting forced labor in Egypt. There is a good chance that one might go as far as to state that slavery might have even been in place before written historical records. Nevertheless, to be politically correct, in North America, slavery started in 1619 when a Dutch ship full of African slaves was heading for Spain when blown off course and made shore in Jamestown, Virginia. Slavery in the United States is rumored to have ended with the Union Army’s triumph with the Civil War in 1865 and the ratification of the 13th amendment to the Constitution on January 31st, 1865. Human Trafficking, which is modern day slave trade, still exist in every country of the world including right here in America. The continuation of slavery has lead to three different categories: People fighting the source, People promoting the source, and people who choose to seem unaware.
In 2000, The United States officially passed the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. This act “requires the state department to rank countries according to their efforts to reduce slavery and trafficking in humans.”(Smith, 1). The State Department now releases annual TIP, Trafficking in Persons, report that reflexes on 89 countries and the efforts put forth by each country to warfare human trafficking. The Trafficking Victims Protection Act gave birth to the TIP report. This report ranks the counties into certain classifications based on the efforts of meeting the minimum standards for preventing and fighting trafficking. With the help of the Trafficked Victims Protection Act, the Department of Justice has implemented a Human Trafficking Task Force in many different cities all around the world. Our Government seems to be hands on with the issue of modern day slavery, with the help of such organizations as the Not for Sale Campaign, The Home Foundation, Free the Slaves, or Love 146.
